Your Favourite Label 006 ~ Kevin Benishek of Magpie Brewing Co.

Kevin Benishek

This week I spoke with Kevin Benishek. Kevin is now the Creative Director at MuteHouse, previously the creative mind behind the ever expanding Magpie Brewing Co brand of South Korea.

Magpie is arguable the most popular craft beer spot in Seoul. Founded by four friends in 2011 in a qut alley in Seoul, Magpie has since expanded to locations in Hongdae and Jeju Island.

A brand who’s constantly changing up their recipes and experimenting with with a variety of unique imported hops.

Kevin’s take on “out there” design mixed with a flurry of influences including Korean Shamans makes for an excellent read.

Our first South Korean brand to feature on the channel, enjoy!

WHAT WAS THE LAST BEER YOU DRANK?

Hidden Track – Session IPA (it’s a Korean Beer)

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE BEER (BESIDES MAGPIE OF COURSE)?

That’s always a tough question. I think it depends on what the situation is. My favorite cheap beer to drink with spicy food is Tsingtao. My favorite beer while eating a burger is Pseudo Sue. My favorite beer to drink while working late ~ usually something sour.

WHAT’S IT LIKE DESIGNING AT MAGPIE? CAN YOU TALK US THROUGH THE PROCESS AT ALL?

I’m just freelancing now, but it was great while I was there. We’re all friends so we can play off of each other in a fun way. Sometimes I’d shoot an idea to the owners, or they’d shoot an idea to me and I really would just try to push it from there and see how far can I take it while keeping the brand aesthetic.

For labels and posters I would say the process is pretty standard. Usually we have a name picked out first and from there, I just start sketching (poorly) in my books what I would imagine the label to be like.

At this point mainly just trying to focus on the feeling the name gives off. From there I dive into color palettes and and try to balance out the shapes for whichever product we’re going to be making. And I guess after that it’s just fully sketching out the concept and slowly dialing it in until it comes to life.

YOUR FAVOURITE LABEL?

It’s really hard to choose just one, but if I have to, i’m going to give a shout out to Stiegl’s light lager. I don’t particularly drink a ton of Stiegl but I am guilty of buying it a few times just because I love the can, so i’m going to say that. That and maybe…all the War Pigs cans.

FAVOURITE LABEL YOU’VE WORKED ON?

My favorite label would probably be for a Magpie beer called, Red Magick (부적/bujeok in Korean). Essentially the poster/label is a bujeok ~ “Bujeok are amulets and talismans that Korean Shamans make for protection from misfortune, healing, prosperity and good fortune. These are typically inscribed in red letters on yellow paper (both “good luck” colors), and they can be placed in the home or carried on the person”

I’m by no means a shaman, but I studied about this practice for a while, and decided to do as the shamans do, which is an interesting experience (something work checking out) I was making them in hopes to ward off bad decisions while intoxicated. I hope it worked.

WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION?

I look at a lot of books. Particularly, I find old book illustrations inspiring but I usually get the most excited about animation. There are so many ways to illustrate emotions and  it’s really cool to see how different people express that.

IF YOU COULD HAVE SOMEONE PLAY YOU IN A FILM, WHO WOULD IT BE?

I feel like Jason Bateman would do a solid job.

WHAT’S THE ONE SUBJECT YOU THINK YOU COULD BEAT ANYONE ANSWERING ON?

I wouldn’t say i’m the best, but I usually rank pretty high in the “Name the thing” category on the Quiz Up game.

So i’m going to to say naming the thing.

GOT ANY GOOD FACTS OR JOKES FOR US?

My home state of Wisconsin, USA is the Ginseng capitol of the world. It’s pretty awesome to see “Wisconsin Ginseng” while traveling around Asia.

ADVISE FOR ASPIRING BEER / BREWERY DESIGNERS?

Choose the uncomfortable design and see where it goes. You might be surprised where it ends up. Many times those end up being my favorite… but ultimately, just have fun.
