Jack has been a designer at Sixpoint Brewery for 7 years now. His iconic style and weird and wonderful cans are a result of both his brain and the culminate brain of the brewery.
In this interview he talks through his approach, where his inspiration comes from as well as who’d best play him in film. They’re so similar looking as soon as you realise who it is!

WHAT WAS THE LAST BEER YOU DRANK?
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE BEER (BESIDES SIXPOINT OF COURSE)?
I can answer to what has been my favorite in recent memory. Solstice D’été Aux Framboises from Brasserie Dieu du Ciel! One of the most flavorful fruited sour beers I’ve ever had, can’t imagine how many pounds they use in there but it really blew me away.
WHAT’S IT LIKE DESIGNING AT SIXPOINT? CAN YOU TALK US THROUGH THE PROCESS AT ALL?
I’ve been working at Sixpoint for 7 years now, and it was my first job after I graduated college. It’s a dream job for me really with the best of both worlds: beer and design.
I work very closely with our formulations team, which includes the brewers as well as some of the other marketing crew. We formulate our beers in what we like to call our Mad Scientist approach. We visualize what a beer could be – how it could taste, smell, look and feel – and then set out, through a blend of art and science, to create it.
Generally I take the lead with the design direction but occasionally some of the other crew will have fully fledged ideas for a beer and pitch the visual concept they have in their head. I’ve been working with a lot of the guys here for several years so we’ve been able to form quite the team.
As for the actual process, I always start with pencil and paper, which leads to an inked illustration. I’m a big believer in starting analog as it really lets my own personal style shine through. I then take that and scan it, vectorize it, and color everything in Illustrator.
YOUR FAVOURITE LABEL?
I am a huge fan of all the labels that Evan Cohen does for Hudson Valley Brewery. He’s got such an amazing style and continuously outdoes himself with every release. It’s hard to choose a particular label because they are all so beautiful.
FAVOURITE LABEL YOU’VE WORKED ON?
Favourite label you’ve worked on? They are all my babies so I love them equally 😉 But for real, my favorite label at the moment would be Atomic Resin.
WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION?
Traveling has always been a massive source of inspiration to me. There’s something about being immersed in a new environment that always helps expand my creativity.
I’m also a huge fan of tattoo art and culture, specifically traditional tattoo artwork, and some of that rubs off in my illustrations. Another treasure trove of inspiration is all the museums and art galleries we have in NYC. There’s never a shortage of fantastic artwork coming in and out fo this city.
IF YOU COULD HAVE SOMEONE PLAY YOU IN A FILM, WHO WOULD IT BE?
Wallace Shawn*… but he would have to play me as a kid.

WHAT’S THE ONE SUBJECT YOU THINK YOU COULD BEAT ANYONE ANSWERING ON?
“What (musical) artist is this?”
GOT ANY GOOD FACTS OR JOKES FOR US?
The smell of rain after hitting a prolonged dry-spell is called “petrichor”.
ADVISE FOR ASPIRING BEER / BREWERY DESIGNERS?
Looking for inspiration is natural, but the best and most unique designs will come from within. If you question it, it’s probably a good idea.
